Joanne L. Richardson, MFS, EMT-P, F-ABMDI – Coroner
Joanne Richardson, Summit County Coroner, got her start as a deputy coroner in Summit County in 1992 and went on to intern with the Denver Coroner/Medical Examiner office. She was employed by the Larimer County Coroner/ME’s office for three years during which time she was sent to the Police Academy. She recently earned a Master’s degree in Forensic Science and Investigation from National University, and is now working on a second Master’s degree in Grief & Bereavement counseling.
In December of 2006, Joanne became board certified as a Medicolegal Death Investigator through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators or ABMDI. As of this writing, she is the only Board certified coroner in Colorado.
In January of 2007, the Coroner’s office met accreditation standards through the International Association of Coroner’s & Medical Examiners. The accreditation process consisted of meeting or exceeding requirements in four areas: Administrative, Forensic, Investigations and Facilities.
Joanne sits on the Colorado Coroner Standards & Training Board whose purpose is to train newly elected or appointed coroners as well as making sure all Coroner’s meet their yearly education requirement of 16 hours. Joanne is also on the Advisory Committee for the International Association of Coroner’s & Medical Examiners as well as the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.
Struggling with budget constraints and computer problems, Joanne has managed to maintain an efficient office and one which is revered by the community and law enforcement alike. The Coroner’s office staff have followed Joanne’s lead and continued with their own professional education and personal development to support and enhance their work.
